Stay at Mom's where we offer a chill, beachside apartment for two located just a block from the ocean. The space is designed for couples seeking refuge from the daily grind. Unplug with a book, kick back in the courtyard, watch the waves break at the end of the street, or take in a world class sunset just blocks away
Located above our retail store & sweet shop, the apartment is 600 square feet of sun soaked space with solid oak floors and Outer Banks history scattered throughout. Antique heart pine doors salvaged from Kitty Hawk, a bookshelf in the living room from the original 70's era Kitty Hawk Country Store, and stools in the kitchen from a long closed schoolhouse inject a bit of old school Outer Banks charm into the space. Local and vintage art & photography we've collected over the years hang on the walls. Vintage rugs are juxtaposed against the clean modern lines of our new & comfortable furniture. The apartment reflects the vibe of our shop downstairs, mixing a curated collection of vintage & new that we think you will enjoy. There are 2 smart TV's, Netflix and Wifi.
Enjoy an open living plan with a fully equipped kitchen featuring Kitchen Aid appliances and a gas range plus everything you need for cooking meals. Knife set, toaster, coffee maker & french press, a tea kettle, cutting boards, pots & pans, cooking & serving utensils, vintage glasses and plates. We also provide olive oil, salt & pepper, sugar and a few basic spices. Complimentary fresh ground coffee, fruit and granola bars await your first morning here. Barstools at a table that doubles as an island is where you can enjoy your meals, or opt to eat outside at one of the outdoor tables. We do not currently have a microwave but have the space to add one soon!
The bedroom offers a plush king size bed with linen pillow cases and duvet, and white Egyptian Cotton sheets. A super comfy chair and ottoman near the window provide a perfect reading nook or place to kick back in the bedroom and watch some Netflix.
In the brightly lit, sparkling clean bathroom, you'll enjoy a walk-in tile shower with on-demand hot water that ensures you never run out, no matter how long your partner may take! In case you travel light or have forgotten something, we provide a hair dryer, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, cotton swabs, toilet paper and extra wash cloths. White fluffy towels and two soft bamboo robes await you.
Feel free to use the Whirlpool steam washer & dryer in the laundry area leading into the bathroom. Laundry detergent, a steam iron and cleaning supplies can be found here along with a stand up oscillating fan. Storage drawers in this area allow ample room to unpack, and a large mirror assures you have enough space to get ready.
You'll be surrounded by local neighborhood streets that are great to stroll or bike around. Some of them are Outer Banks vacation rentals during the Summer, but many (west of the bypass) are year-round residents. We have a killer beach access at the end of our street, about a two minute walk away. There is no public parking so it's an especially nice, uncrowded access even at the height of Summer! Once on the beach & looking south, you'll see a neighborhood landmark- Avalon Pier. A short walk down the beach, there's an arcade, bar, fishing and lots of locals hanging out. From October 1st through April 30th, our beach access becomes a drive-on point for four wheel drive vehicles. Secure a beach driving & fishing permit from the town or local tackle shop and hit the beach in your 4x4! Nearby you'll find several eateries, shops & bars. Yoga, an open air fruit & veggie market, a barber shop, grocery stores, tacos and donuts are also nearby. We can't forget to mention the fabulous sunsets on the west side of the bypass, just a short walk or bike ride away.
We have been told we have the best smoothies & acai bowls on the beach and when you Stay at Mom's, they'll be right downstairs just a few steps away! We also offer house made cold brew coffee to get your day jumping, and delicious milkshakes and ice cream for your nightly sweet tooth craving. If a latte or cortado is more you're style, walk next door and grab your favorite cup at our friend Ashley's Espresso Parlor. Ashley also sells beer and wine; make sure to tell her Mom's sent you! In walking distance you'll find Henry's across the street and it's a local legacy. Greasy spoon, diner style- not fancy, but the staff is friendly, it's quick and cheap and you'll see lots of old timers starting their day. For lunch or dinner you can find craft burgers, oysters, and a nice beer and bourbon selection just two blocks south at Two Roads Tavern. There's a fresh fruit & veggie market in walking distance (open April 1st through October 1st). Yoga is just two blocks away for your morning or evening reset. Have we already mentioned the ocean is just one block away?
Looking to get in touch with your inner youth? Hit up the mini-putt across the street; they also have a decent arcade. If nature is more your thing, we provide binoculars and flashlights- go enjoy the fabulous birding our area offers, or an evening beach walk to spot ghost crabs. At sundown, bike across the street and take in one of the world's best sunsets at a sound-side access and watch the sun dip below the water as it sets. One of our favorite spots is easily reached on foot or by bike & will take you through the local Bay Drive neighborhood. You'll pop over a small hill where it will drop you down to a low key sound side residential area nestled amongst the live oaks and peering out across Kitty Hawk Bay. Here you'll find a bike path that goes for miles in either direction and will lead you to several soundside parks where you can take in "the other side of the beach". Information on fishing charters, kayak tours, standup paddle boarding, yoga, surf lessons & more are in the apartment for you.
For anything you may have questions about, Jess is a Kitty Hawk native born & raised here and Derik has been here for 20+ years. This is our first experience working in the field of Outer Banks vacation rentals but we are so excited about being your hosts! We operate our shop downstairs and try to be available if needed. We've left our best suggestions in the apartment for you, but feel free to ask for recommendations on anything else you may be looking for. We also invite you to come enjoy the shop vibes downstairs. It's bustling in the Summer but very chill in the off-season, where your main interaction will be with our locals. During the Summer, our outdoor spaces are great for kicking back and soaking in the sun and ocean breeze! There are picnic tables & umbrellas on our grassy front yard, along with cornhole boards. You'll find a quiet & shady courtyard to relax in the back. During the winter months, come down and warm yourself with a cup of hot coffee beside our vintage Preway fireplace.
